Summary

Few pieces of artwork distill the passion for Star Wars as do posters。 From Tom Jung's iconic one-sheet for Episode IV to Roger Kastel’s Gone with the Wind–inspired painting for Episode V and beyond, Star Wars has enjoyed nearly four decades of poster art from some of the most renowned artists working in movies。 The fifth book in the George Lucas–curated Star Wars Art series, Posters collects the best artwork from all six Star Wars films, the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated television series, and limited-edition prints。 This collection unites all of the action, artistry, and drama of a galaxy far, far away into one lavishly produced tome。

At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon (yes, it is time to put on the "old man shouts at cloud" hat) movie posters have gotten a lot less 。。。 memorable 。。。 over the years。 "Star Wars" is hardly immune to this trend - and it is understandable, in the modern age。 Now, you can just hop online and check out movie trailers and social media buzz at the drop of a hat - and where once, movie posters were arguably the primary way of attracting attention, now they probably have become almost obsolete。S At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon (yes, it is time to put on the "old man shouts at cloud" hat) movie posters have gotten a lot less 。。。 memorable 。。。 over the years。 "Star Wars" is hardly immune to this trend - and it is understandable, in the modern age。 Now, you can just hop online and check out movie trailers and social media buzz at the drop of a hat - and where once, movie posters were arguably the primary way of attracting attention, now they probably have become almost obsolete。Still, it is nice to look back at posters from an earlier time - when the images splayed across movie theater lobbies and (later) adorning video store walls were the enticement to get people to pick up a certain title from the video store, or plunk down for a seat in the local theater。 Granted, a lot of time (especially with bottom shelf horror or drive-in "classics") the poster images were wildly salacious, and sometimes had only a vague resemblance to the movie itself, but that was all part of the fun。 (*)And so, it is fun to look back at movie posters of the past and among those, some of the very best are the array of promotional art produced for the "Star Wars" films, past and present。 In truth, there are far too many poster variations (especially if you go on to include the various corporate tie-ins and specialized poster art commissioned to adorn childhood bedroom walls) to completely encompass in one book, but this does a very good job of picking out both some of the most famous images, as well as a selection of some lesser-known (but still excellent) options。 It is a lovely book to page through - the posters are presented beautifully, and those which have been chosen are all amazing to look at。(*Yes, I know that there are a lot of alternate/after-market posters still being created for various movies - there are any number of modern, awesome takes on poster art for various films, old and new available to look at online - but for the most part, this seems more like a cottage industry, now, since the "old" days of walking around a theater, drive-in, or video store, and ogling the beautiful art adorning every bit of bare wall space, is sadly passed) 。。。more

A fascinating collection of the posters surrounding the theme。 The one-page introduction, and foreword by the 2 distinguished illustrators set the scene perfectly!

I love looking at different artist's interpretations of the films。 My only complaint is that it needed more pages to cover all 6 films and The Clone Wars! As a fan of movie posters (particularly ones that display a lot of creativity and imagination), the posters for Star Wars have always been among my favorites。 The book "Star Wars Art: Posters" includes a variety of posters from all six films of Lucas's Star Wars saga。 There are also posters inspired by other sources, such as the Clone Wars animated series。 Unused poster concepts are printed here as well - it's nice to see some artwork that I had not seen before。The book is a nicely bound hardcov As a fan of movie posters (particularly ones that display a lot of creativity and imagination), the posters for Star Wars have always been among my favorites。 The book "Star Wars Art: Posters" includes a variety of posters from all six films of Lucas's Star Wars saga。 There are also posters inspired by other sources, such as the Clone Wars animated series。 Unused poster concepts are printed here as well - it's nice to see some artwork that I had not seen before。The book is a nicely bound hardcover with thick pages。 I found the printing quality to be well above average; the posters are printed large and are very detailed。This is a worthy entry into the Star Wars Art book series, although I can't say its my favorite of the bunch: that accolade belongs to Star Wars Art: Concepts。 However, "Posters" is a great book that will be of interest to those who like either Star Wars or movie posters。 Recommended!Review published on MovieArtBook。com 。。。more

Now this is an impressive book - yes its yet another Star Wars book - as if there are not enough out there already。 But no not like this。 The book is a collection of artwork both used and unused in the promotion of the films and to a lesser extend merchandise。What makes this book fascinating is the range of material from limited edition prints to unused titles (Revenge of the Jedi?) - the book covers many different artists and styles as well as aspects of the Star Wars canon - I particularly lik Now this is an impressive book - yes its yet another Star Wars book - as if there are not enough out there already。 But no not like this。 The book is a collection of artwork both used and unused in the promotion of the films and to a lesser extend merchandise。What makes this book fascinating is the range of material from limited edition prints to unused titles (Revenge of the Jedi?) - the book covers many different artists and styles as well as aspects of the Star Wars canon - I particularly like the Empire recruitment posters。 The book is a fascinating look in to the world of publicity artwork and film posters from some of the biggest names in the business。 The binding and format lend themselves perfectly for this book which are used to full effect。 For a book that could be so easily accused of "money for old rope" this is surprisingly good。 。。。more

Star Wars Art: Posters is a beautiful collection of some amazing Star Wars artwork。 With big full page spreads in a nice hardcover binding, this book displays that artwork of some of our favorite Star Wars posters。 While the book does not include every Star Wars poster ever made, it has an extensive collection of all of the movie posters as well as promotional, video game, and collectible posters that were offered。 Of even more interest are the images of sketches and rough paintings of proposed Star Wars Art: Posters is a beautiful collection of some amazing Star Wars artwork。 With big full page spreads in a nice hardcover binding, this book displays that artwork of some of our favorite Star Wars posters。 While the book does not include every Star Wars poster ever made, it has an extensive collection of all of the movie posters as well as promotional, video game, and collectible posters that were offered。 Of even more interest are the images of sketches and rough paintings of proposed posters that were never used or just early concepts of some of the most famous posters of the franchise。 With 180 pages of artwork, this is a book worth having。Star Wars Art: Posters is the fifth book in Star Wars Art series。 It’s also one of my favorites so far。 The artwork for the Star Wars movie posters is a varied array of stunning styles and imagery。 Just the first three movies–A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi–present a good sized selection of posters considering each film had more than one。 For instance, the initial release had concept treatments by Ralph McQuarrie and John Solie, a promo by Howard Chaykin, a style “A” theatrical one-sheet and half-sheet by Tom Jung, soundtrack album posters by Tom Jung and John Berkey, a style “C” theatrical one-sheet by Tom Chantrell, a style “D” theatrical one-sheet by Charles White III and Drew Struzan, a Polish concept poster by Wojtek Siudmak, an Italian concept poster by Michelangelo Papuzza, a vehicles concept poster by Noriyoshi Ohrai (who quickly became one of my favorite artists as I flipped through the book), and the Japanese film release poster by Noriyoshi Orai。 Each of the original films gets that kind of attention。 On top of that, there are Coca-Cola posters, the artwork for the novelizations, logos, even poster concepts by unknown artists。 It’s an impressive selection。The layout of the book is mostly by time of creation。 It starts with the earliest poster artwork by Ralph McQuarrie in 1975 and goes all the way to promotional posters for the Star Wars Rebels television show。 While the bulk of the book focuses on posters for the film releases (including even the Ewok films), there’s a good chunk devoted to more modern pieces like the propaganda and tourism prints。 Some of the posters get two page spreads, while most fill up a single page。 There are even some gate folds for posters that form a series (like Drew Struzan’s set for all six films)。 Throughout the book, all the images are large, filling up the pages and presenting the artwork in exquisite detail。 Even the cover is adorned with great artwork with different images for front, back, with, and without the dust jacket。 Every image includes some info saying who did the piece, the year, and what it was for。 There’s also a nice foreword by Drew Struzan and an introduction by Roger Kastel (both artists whose posters are included in the book)。 The book ends with a collection of short biographies for every artist featured in the book that also includes page numbers for where their work appeared。Here is the full list of artists featured in the book: John Alvin, Kia Asamiya, John Berkey, Randy Berrett, John Blas, William Brent, Renato Casaro, Tom Chantrell, Howard Chaykin, Cliff Chiang, Amy Beth Christenson, Joe Corroney, Mark Daniels, Craig Drake, Witold Dybowski, Gris Grimly, Tomer Hanuka, Louis C。 Hebert, Tibor Helenyi, Adam Hughes, Robert Hunt, Rob Jones, Tom Jung, Roger Kastel, Rich Kelly, Dave Kinsey, Mike Kungl, Ellen Lee, David McMacken, Ralph McQuarrie, Olly Moss, Del Nichols, Noriyoshi Ohrai, Michelangelo Papuzza, Dave Perillo, Tim Reamer, Brian Rood, Mike Sadd, Tsuneo Sanda, Manuel Sanjulian, Kazuhiko Sano, Robert Silvers, Wojtek Siudmak, Todd Slater, John Solie, Mark Steele, Frank Stockton, Tyler Stout, Drew Struzan, Steve Thomas, Boris Vallejo, Tom Whalen and Charles White III。If you’re a fan of Star Wars art, this is a book worth getting。 It’s a great collection and display of some wonderful artwork covering a large span of the franchise and multiple facets of it’s reach。 From the films to video games, television and promotional items, it covers a lot of ground。 Furthermore, it presents a bit of the history of the first posters made for the films。 If you’re wondering what the original posters were and what all the different styles are, then this is a great resource in helping you track down and identify each。 The book is presented in a large format, 10-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches, which works great。 It’s not too big to be cumbersome (like Star Wars: The Blueprints) and it’s not too small as to make it hard to enjoy the artwork。 Really, this is a great balance of all aspects and one of the best books I’ve seen yet in the Star Wars Art series。 I give it a five out of five。 。。。more
